Environmental, social and governance (ESG) and sustainability aren’t just buzzwords — they’re business imperatives. Leading organisations are using them to drive stronger financial outcomes, win top talent and stay ahead of climate and compliance risks.
At Baker Tilly, we don’t just follow this shift — we lead it.
Starting in 2022, Baker Tilly (US) began to survey its key stakeholders to understand what ESG topics matter to them and what they think is material to Baker Tilly. That year they started internally with their team members and then expanded their scope to clients in 2023.
Based on this data, they formulated a materiality matrix as an input for their goal setting and decision making.
In 2024, the survey targeted team members, clients and, for the first time, suppliers and vendors.
Despite some shifts across topics, the priorities remain clear. Stakeholders consistently ranked these issues at the top: data privacy and cybersecurity; ethics, compliance and independence; employee health, safety and well-being; and talent attraction, retention and development. Innovation and research and development stood out for internal stakeholders, while corporate governance remained a key focus externally.
We are not seeking to copy what others are doing. Instead, we concentrate on what we can achieve and control within our four walls, while remaining true to who we are as an organisation, whether through serving our clients or creating meaningful opportunities for our team members.
